On Tuesday 8
th November 2011 the English advanced courses of Mrs Balzer, Mrs Schloßhauer and Mr Severin had their English
lessons in an uncommon way. We were visited by employees of Carpus e.V. from Cottbus. Uwe Berger and Nena Abrea who originates from the Philippines, prepared a project about resources and human rights for our courses. With the help of games, group work, role plays and a short film they showed us, that many of our everyday items and luxurious goods consist of metals like gold, nickel and coltan. We learned a lot about mining and the use of these materials and became aware of the negative impact on the citizens of the countries, where they are mined. Especially Nena Abrea´s report about the destructive effects of nickel mining on her home country, the Philippines, was impressive and shocking. We had many opportunities to discuss the problems that were shown and could prove our English knowledge. After a long and sometimes hard day we were aware of the fact, that we as consumers are responsible for a sustainable and careful handling of resources and our environment. We want to say thank you to Uwe Berger and Nena Abrea for this interesting and informative day.
